Mentor: Paul Rowe, Director, Applied Automation
Jamie is making the most of every opportunity available through the Tamar Engineering Project, combining his academic ambition and interest in the automation and aerospace industries.
Receiving a Tamar Engineering Project scholarship has transformed Jamie's university experience by removing financial pressures and creating the space needed to focus fully on his academic studies and future career aspirations.
“The financial security it has granted me has relieved unnecessary anxiety, allowing me to focus more on my education,” Jamie explains.
Alongside financial support, Jamie has benefitted from the unique mentoring opportunities that are central to the Tamar Engineering Project. Being matched with Paul Rowe, Director of Applied Automation, has provided valuable insight into the engineering industry and opened doors to professional networks and career opportunities.
“I've gained access to a personal mentor within the automation industry, leading me to set my professional ambitions much higher," says Jamie. "I've made connections that have offered numerous opportunities. The information I have already gained is invaluable and I have no doubt it will help me progress further in my future career.”
The scholarship has also helped Jamie build confidence and feel part of a wider community within engineering and higher education.
“The Tamar Engineering Project has played a pivotal role in my university experience by providing me with confidence in academic settings and making me feel genuinely welcomed into a supportive community,” Jamie reflects. “Besides easing financial pressures, it connected me to a network that encouraged growth and ambition that I could not have acquired otherwise.”
Looking ahead, Jamie is considering a range of opportunities after graduation and is keen to continue developing specialist engineering expertise.
“At present, I would like to further my studies and specialise my craft through a master's degree,” Jamie says. “I intend to progress into the automation or aerospace industry and bring the skills I have developed along the way with me.”

A big thank you

To everyone who has supported the Tamar Engineering Project, Jamie shares a heartfelt message of thanks:
“To the donors who kindly funded my scholarship, I would like to tell them that their support changed my university experience in ways that go far beyond funding. Knowing someone has chosen to invest in my education has motivated me to work harder and make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. I am incredibly grateful.”
Jamie also encourages others to consider supporting student scholarships and bursaries:
“Anyone thinking of supporting an award, scholarship or bursary should understand the true impact their support can have on a student. From personal experience, access to personal mentors in industry and professional networking opportunities is invaluable in preparing students for professional life and future careers.”
