Mentor: Martin Keen, Master Inventor and IBM Technical Trainer at IBM
Benjamin’s path to university was shaped by resilience and determination. Growing up in a family where finances were always tight, he knew early on that pursuing higher education in engineering would be a challenge. “I’ve always loved problem-solving and understanding how things work,” he explains. “But without support, I don’t think I’d be here today.” The Tamar Engineering Project scholarship has lifted much of the pressure: “It’s given me the chance to focus properly on my studies, rather than constantly worrying about money.”
As he progresses through his studies, Benjamin says the scholarship has made a significant difference to his university experience by reducing the financial pressures that can often distract students from their academic goals.
“The Tamar Engineering Project has had a very positive impact on my second year of studies, particularly by easing the financial pressures that often come with university life. As a minority student, financial worries can sometimes become a major distraction from academic goals.”
The support provided through the scholarship has enabled Benjamin to focus more fully on his studies, attend lectures consistently and dedicate additional time to developing his software engineering skills. Rather than worrying about day-to-day expenses, he has been able to concentrate on learning, personal growth and preparing for a future career in the technology sector.
“Because of this support, I have been able to dedicate more time and energy to improving my academic performance, attending lectures consistently, completing coursework to a higher standard, and developing my skills in software engineering.”
Alongside the financial support provided by the Tamar Engineering Project, Benjamin has been matched with mentor Martin Keen, Master Inventor and IBM Technical Trainer.
The mentoring relationship is progressing well, with the pair meeting regularly throughout the year. Benjamin values the guidance and encouragement he has received, which has helped him remain motivated and focused on his academic and professional development.
Reflecting on the impact of the scholarship, Benjamin describes the support as providing both practical assistance and peace of mind.
“Knowing that there is support available has helped me stay focused, organised and determined to succeed academically. It has made a real difference in allowing me to prioritise my education and make the most of the opportunities available to me at university.”

Looking to the future, Benjamin is keen to use his software engineering skills to address some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges.
“I want to work in sustainable engineering and help develop technologies that make a real difference to the environment,” he explains. “Long-term, I'd love to contribute to projects that tackle climate change and create a more sustainable future.”
To those considering supporting a scholarship, he adds: “Don’t underestimate the impact you can have. Even a single award can completely change the trajectory of someone’s life.”
