The Global Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Jennifer's work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

Goal 02: SDG 2 - Zero HungerGoal 04: SDG 4 - Quality EducationGoal 06: SDG 6 - Clean Water and SanitationGoal 08: SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic GrowthGoal 12: SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and ProductionGoal 14: SDG 14 - Life Below WaterGoal 15: SDG 15 - Life on LandGoal 17: SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals

About Jennifer

I am an ecological geneticist with a background in plant ecology, specialising in the genetics of species interactions and the application of molecular tools to tackle complex ecological questions. My research spans a wide range of systems—plants, pollinators, herbivores, and microbes—and environments from temperate to tropical biomes, integrating molecular, experimental, and field approaches.

As Co-(Deputy) Director of the Research England–funded Centre of Research excellence in Intelligent and Sustainable Systems (CRISPS) at the University of Plymouth, I work at the interface of academia, industry, and policy. CRISPS addresses the urgent challenge of sustainably feeding a growing global population through research in production health and welfare, agri-tech and controlled environments, and soil health. These themes are all addressed in our MSc Sustainable Food Production, which I lead.

I am particularly interested in cross-disciplinary approaches to sustainability challenges, building collaborations that translate cutting-edge research into solutions for conservation, farming, fisheries, and food security.

My current research projects focus on:

- Molecular tools for biodiversity assessment – advancing techniques to quantify biodiversity in human-influenced environments, with applications for soil health in agriculture and plant–pollinator networks.

- Coastal plant conservation – population and conservation genetics of mangroves and seagrass to inform adaptation and restoration strategies.

- Ex situ conservation and reintroduction – improving success for endangered species, including bryophytes and carnivorous plants.
