The Global Goals
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Alejandro's work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
About Alejandro
I am Associate Professor in Digital Design (Architecture) and Deputy Head of the School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Plymouth. My work explores how digital design, emerging technologies, and participatory approaches can support innovation in the built environment, with a particular focus on sustainability, construction, housing, and urban challenges.
I have contributed to research and innovation projects worth more than £7 million, funded by organisations including UK Research and Innovation (AHRC, EPSRC, ESRC and Research England), the Forestry Commission, the Office for Students, EPSON Robotic Solutions, and the Chartered Institute of Building. Working across architecture, design, engineering, and the social sciences, I have developed innovations in areas such as material traceability, digital fabrication, healthcare, modern methods of construction, and community engagement.
Alongside my research, I have led curriculum development, programme design, and strategic initiatives across architecture and design education. I supervise doctoral researchers across architecture, digital arts, and media, supporting projects that investigate the role of design and innovation in addressing social, environmental, and cultural challenges.
Supervised Research Degrees

2022-26, Alexandra Carr, “Interdisciplinary relationships between design and cognitive psychology to facilitate innovation for interaction” (PhD Digital Arts & Technology, Director of Studies).
2021-26, Zahra Tehrani, “A framework for nature-inspired digital architectural design: A constructivist grounded theory study” (PhD Architecture, Director of Studies).
2019-25, Mohammad Al-Haj Baddar (viva passed on Dec 2025 - pending revisions), “A criticism of the profile of the architecture of Jordan: The stakeholders, the processes, the outcomes” (PhD Architecture, 2nd Supervisor).
2017-21, Ricky Burke (completed), “The role of virtual and digital tools in development of inclusive environments for vulnerable people” (PhD Arts & Media, Director of Studies).
Teaching
My teaching focuses on tackling real-world challenges through design and collaboration with industry, communities, and public sector partners. I am particularly interested in how emerging technologies can support sustainable construction, modern methods of construction, digital fabrication, and more participatory approaches to design and decision-making.
I have led curriculum development initiatives across architecture, design, and technology-related disciplines, including the creation of new provision in areas aligned with innovation, industry engagement, and regional economic priorities. This includes programmes such as BSc Industrial Product Design and Technology, or the renovation of our School's Masters-level portfolio.
